75 SPIRITUAL LEADERS PARTICIPATE IN PBCI TRAINING Lumad
Spiritual Leaders, Muslim Ustadzes, and Christian Pastors attended the Introductory
Course On Peacebuilding during a series of seminars held between
March 1st and April 30th, 2007 in Cotabato City, GenSan City, and Davao
City. They represented the tri-people in Mindanao who are
experiencing various kinds and levels of conflicts in their respective
communities. In this basic peacebuilders training course, they were given a space to share each other's context of conflict, to discover how to start a strategic peacebuilding approach that is relevant to their specific contexts, and how to assess their context's local peacebuilding resources to the end that the long-term reconciliation journey is sustainable. This seminar series is a part of a peacebuilding training program designed and facilitated by Peacebuilders Community, Inc. (PBCI). The whole program includes training modules in Fact-Finding Missions, Field Information Management, Peace Education, Justice Advocacy, Inter-Faith Dialogue, Cross-Cultural Communications, Conflict Transformation, Media Relations, Trauma Healing, and Personal Development. In the next five years, PBCI will work with various religious and community leaders to contextualize and sustain this training program. The long-term objective is to form faith-based or community-based Peacebuilding Volunteer Teams in areas of conflict in Mindanao. Each team will be composed of 15 people and will be divided into 5 task groups—Health & Security, Logistics & Communications, Formal & Legal, Information & Documentation, Media & Public Relations. The mission of each Peacebuilding Volunteer Team will be — :: To promote lasting peace in Mindanao by giving skilled, courageous support to peacemakers working in situations of conflict :: To inspire the Bangsamoros, the Lumads, and the Migrants to discard violence in favor of nonviolent action as a means of settling differences :: To provide churches and communities with first-hand information and resources for responding to situations of conflict, and to urge their active involvement :: To interpret a nonviolent perspective to the media and broader Philippine society |

BASILAN—A
delegation from the Peacebuilders Community, Inc. (PBCI) attended the 4th
Mindanao Peoples' Peace Summit. It was held last December 12-17,
2006 at the Datu Dizal Cultural Center, Municipality of Lamitan, Province
of Basilan, Mindanao. The PBCI delegates were Dann & Joji Pantoja, Omar Jahuran, Elwyn Neri, and Datu Haron Al-Rasheed Baraguir. Neri represents the Migrants from the Greater Davao Area, while Jahuran will serve as an alternate representative of the Bangsamoros from the Sama-Tausug tribes of Sulu and Tawi-tawi. This event was sponsored by the Mindanao Peoples' Peace Movement (MPPM), a coalition of several grassroots peace organizations coming from the three major peoples of Mindanao--Lumad (indigenous peoples), Bangsamoro (mostly Muslim peoples) and Migrants (mostly Christianized settlers and their descendants)--otherwise known as the Tri-People. Among the speakers were Sister Crescencia L. Lucero, Executive Director of the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines, and Prof. Abhoud Sayed Lingga, Executive Director of the Institute of Bangsamoro Studies. The theme of the Summit was "Intensifying our Joint Efforts for the Realization of the Rights to Self-Determination of Peoples." According to their Midsayap 2002 Declaration, "MPPM, in its desire to attain a just and lasting peace in Mindanao, calls on the Government of the Republic of the Philippines to hold within the next few years a United Nations-Supervised Referendum in the Bangsamoro areas of Mindanao. In this Referendum, the Bangsamoro people will have the opportunity to determine their political future either as a part of the Philippines or as an independent nation. The MPPM pledges its commitment to support and promote this proposal through a multi-track strategy, including, but not limited to, legislative pressure, peoples' initiatives, peace constituency building and national and international lobbying." |

A CALL TO CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES: PARTICIPATE IN BUILDING PEACE IN OUR LAND!
Representatives from the Lumads, the Bangsamoros, and the
Migrants expressed their deep concern about the
current impasse in the peace talks between the Government of the
Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
(MILF).
An elder of Mindanao People's Caucus (MPC) spoke to us personally and said: "I am deeply bothered
by the lack of participation of Christians in this peacebuilding
effort. Where are they? We need to hear from them. We
need their statements particularly about this impasse in the peace
talks. Aren't they concerned about this deadlock in peace talks that
could lead to another war in our land?"
